Chicago businessman James Crown dies in a single vehicle accident

James Crown, a prominent Chicago businessman and member of the billionaire Crown family, has died at the age of 70. According to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office, he was involved in a single vehicle accident at Aspen Motorsports Park in Colorado.

The coroner's office reported that "Crown collided with an impact barrier" and that "multiple blunt force trauma was evident." The official cause of death is still pending an autopsy.

Crown was president of Henry Crown & Company and owned Aspen Skiing company. He was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Aspen Institute, Trustee for both Museum of Science and Industry as well as University of Chicago, and member American Academy Arts & Sciences.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement expressing his condolences: “I send my deepest condolences to his wife, four children, grandchildren, and the entire Crown family and pray for their peace.”

Crown will be remembered not only for his business acumen but also for his philanthropy work which included investing in Chicago's civic organizations such as building safer communities through collaboration with local government agencies.
