Trooper Ben Gardner was taken to the hospital. The injuries of the other driver and the motorist are unknown.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a crash while assisting a motorist on westbound I-70, milepost 249 in Saline County. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Trooper Ben Gardner, the trooper was helping the driver of a trailer that had broken down on the side of the highway when another vehicle crashed into his patrol car. The driver of the trailer stated that "a truck, that wasn’t paying attention, didn’t get over for the red lights" and collided with the trooper's vehicle.

The impact pushed the patrol car approximately 100-200 feet off-road and caused all airbags to deploy. The motorist said he saw this happen and immediately ran away from his own vehicle as it could have been hit too.

Fortunately, Trooper Ben Gardner confirmed that despite being pinned inside his car due to damage caused by collision, he remained alert and conscious throughout before being taken to hospital for treatment. However, there is no information available about any injuries sustained by other individuals involved in this accident.

As per reports from local authorities at Saline County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), both lanes of westbound I-70 at milepost 249 were closed following this incident but have since reopened after clearing up debris from roadways.

Investigations are ongoing regarding what led up to this unfortunate event which resulted in an injury for one law enforcement officer who was simply doing their job trying to help someone else out.
