Man Dies in Dump Truck Crash in Peru, Maine

On Thursday, a tragic incident occurred in Peru, Maine, resulting in the death of a man from Buckfield. The accident took place around 7:30 a.m. on Route 108 near Greenwoods Road and Auburn Road. Chief Deputy James Urquhart of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office provided details about the crash.

Upon reaching the scene, deputies discovered a 2012 Mack dump truck overturned on its side. Inside the vehicle was Michael Averill, aged 40, who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. According to investigators' findings shared by Urquhart, it was determined that Averill had not been wearing a seat belt during the crash.

At the time of the incident, Averill was operating as an employee for Everett Excavation based in West Paris. The dump truck he was driving was loaded with gravel when tragedy struck.

Fortunately, no other individuals or vehicles were involved in this devastating accident.

Following the crash, traffic had to be redirected through Route 2 and Canton Point Road in Dixfield while Route 108 remained closed temporarily. However, as confirmed by Mexico Fire Department officials later on, Route 108 has since reopened for normal traffic flow.

The sheriff's office received assistance from Mexico police and Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit during their investigation at the scene of this unfortunate event.
