A tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon on the northbound Interstate 805 near Kearny Mesa, resulting in the death of a man. The incident led to road closures for several hours in the area.
The collision initially involved a Freightliner semi-truck and an Acura sedan, causing only minor property damage. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of the Freightliner moved their vehicle to the gore between the I-805 main lanes and the SR-52 transition after the crash. Meanwhile, the driver of the Acura pulled over to the right shoulder of the transition.
In an attempt to discuss what had happened with the semi-truck driver, who remained at that location, CHP Public Information Officer Jesse Matias explained that "the driver of Acura exited his vehicle" and crossed across multiple lanes towards them. After conversing about their collision, when returning back to his car, he walked into lane #1 of SR-52 on-ramp where he was struck by a white Ford pick-up truck.
Tragically, medical personnel declared him dead at scene. The victim has been identified as a 62-year-old man from San Diego; however, law enforcement has not yet released his identity publicly. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported during this incident.
The driver of Ford pick-up truck stayed at scene following this devastating collision according to CHP reports. As part of their investigation into this accident sequence and its cause(s), authorities closed off both right lane along northbound I-805 south Governor Drive and westbound SR-52 on-ramp for approximately two hours before reopening all lanes.
While it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol played any role in these collisions at present time; authorities have ordered toxicology tests through County Medical Examiner's Office pending further information regarding potential factors contributing towards these events.
CHP's San Diego area office is currently conducting an ongoing investigation into determining both cause behind this collision and the exact sequence of events leading up to it.
