Man in Wheelchair Hit by Tractor-Trailer in Willimantic

Police are currently investigating a crash that occurred on Tuesday morning in Willimantic, Connecticut, where a man in a wheelchair was hit by a tractor-trailer. The incident took place at the intersection of Cantor Street and Rt. 32, West Main Street.
According to Fire Chief Marc Scrivener, the 74-year-old man in the wheelchair appeared to have entered the intersection while the tractor-trailer was still in motion and was subsequently struck by one of its back tires. Fortunately, nearby firefighters who were undergoing training noticed the injured man lying on the street and quickly responded to the scene.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m., with Scrivener stating, "When my fire engine crew disembarked from the fire engine and started to provide first aid, [the truck driver] hadn't gotten out of his cab yet. It had just happened moments before he ran up and told firefighters that he believed this guy hit the side of his truck."
The identity of the injured man has not been released; however, he was immediately transported to Hartford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The truck driver remained at the scene throughout police investigations.
As a result of this accident, Rt. 32 between Rt. 6 and Rt. 66 had been temporarily closed but has since reopened for regular traffic flow. Authorities continue their investigation into what led to this unfortunate collision.
