A man has died in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 40, according to family members who identified him. The accident involved two tractor-trailers and occurred near Benson at Mile Marker 318 and N.C. Highway 210 in Johnston County.

The westbound lanes of I-40 were closed until around 3 p.m., causing significant traffic delays. Witnesses reported that one of the trucks was traveling in the left lane when it merged into a right lane, hitting another truck parked on the shoulder of the road.

Roy Ward from Leland was driving a pilot car responsible for escorting an oversized load. He got out of his car to check on the tractor-trailer which had pulled over to the right shoulder when he was struck by one of the vehicles.

Despite CPR and lifesaving efforts, Ward died at the scene while witnesses said one of the truck drivers left in a pickup truck. The other driver and passenger were uninjured.

An official statement from State Highway Patrol regarding this incident has not yet been released. All westbound lanes were closed during investigations with detours forcing drivers off I-40 at Exit 319.
