Driver of stolen pickup truck died at the scene
A man wanted for fraud in Michigan was killed after leading deputies on a brief high-speed chase that ended in a crash on the West Side of San Antonio. The incident occurred around 12:38 a.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Enrique Barrera Highway and Callaghan Road, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
The pursuit began when two deputies spotted a gray F250 pickup truck traveling without headlights on, swerving between correct and opposite traffic lanes. Despite activating their emergency lights to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated and attempted to flee from law enforcement.
Shortly thereafter, at the intersection of Enrique Barrera Highway and Callaghan Road, a Camry collided with the pickup truck. The impact caused the truck to hit a utility pole and overturn. Tragically, the driver was ejected from his vehicle and despite efforts by EMS personnel to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
While both occupants of the Camry did not sustain serious injuries, they were taken to hospital for evaluation as precautionary measures.
Further investigation revealed that prior to this incident, it was discovered that the pickup truck had been stolen. Additionally, authorities found "numerous items believed to be evidence of property crimes" such as checks and copper items inside it.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for a nearby hotel room where they suspected that the driver had been staying off Enrique M Barrera Parkway. Inside this room belonging to 25-year-old Angelica Avilez, law enforcement officials discovered methamphetamine along with other stolen items.
As per current reports available at this time, no information regarding identity has been released about either Avilez or her deceased accomplice who had an active warrant in Michigan related to fraud charges.
Following standard protocol for critical incidents within their department policy guidelines, the deputy involved in responding will be placed on administrative duty for ten days. The deputy in question is a five-year veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Gang Unit.
The investigation into this incident remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
