Officer Swanson died, another person suffered minor injuries
A tragic accident on the 405 Freeway in Carson, California has claimed the life of a 35-year-old Manhattan Beach motorcycle officer. Officer Chad Swanson was killed in a four-vehicle crash that occurred around 5:15 a.m. at Del Amo Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Swanson was on his way to work when he was struck by another vehicle. The CHP spokesman stated, "At this time, it looks like a vehicle may have been traveling at an unsafe speed and possibly conducted an unsafe lane change." A news conference held on the side of the freeway revealed that investigations were ongoing and that part of the freeway had been shut down for further examination.
It is reported that Officer Swanson was ejected from his motorcycle during the collision. Paramedics immediately performed CPR before transporting him to Harbor Medical Center with a police escort. Unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries.
Another individual involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
Officer Swanson had dedicated over 13 years of service to the Manhattan Beach Police Department. He leaves behind his wife, three young sons, and his parents who are now grieving their loss.
All parties involved in yesterday's fatal crash remained at the scene and are cooperating with investigators, according to the Highway Patrol. As a result of the accident, all traffic was diverted off the freeway at Avalon Boulevard. The northbound lanes are expected to remain closed until further notice as investigations continue.
Officer Chad Swanson will be remembered for his dedication, bravery, and positive spirit by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
