Driver severely injured, passenger also hurt
The town of Douglas, Massachusetts was shaken on Thursday afternoon when a massive tree suddenly cracked and toppled onto an SUV, injuring both occupants inside. Witnesses described the incident as a loud bang that caught the white SUV at the wrong moment while driving along South Street.
Authorities believe it to be a freak accident, with Assistant Douglas Fire Chief Kelly Manning stating, "From what we can tell it was a freak accident. The tree spontaneously fell in the road just at that point in time when the car was passing by, and it unfortunately landed on that car with those two people inside."
The driver sustained severe injuries according to Douglas fire officials. However, the passenger managed to extricate them from the vehicle before first responders arrived. Images captured after the incident showed significant damage to both the street and vehicle caused by the fallen tree.
As for how long hospitalization will be necessary for the injured driver remains uncertain at this point. The community is now left grappling with this unexpected event as they work towards recovery.
