A tragic car accident on Mother's Day in Whitewater, California has left a family devastated. The crash involved two cars - a black Tesla and red Chevrolet Suburban - and resulted in the death of three people, including a mother and her two daughters. Six other members of the same family were injured.
The incident occurred just before 7:30 am on Sunday when the Tesla hit the Suburban from behind, causing it to hit the center divider and overturn. "So, this was a traumatic scene with injuries of young people and a mother on Mother’s Day, and it’s heart-wrenching," said California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Montez.
Nine members of the same family were traveling in the Suburban at the time of the accident. At least five individuals were ejected from their seats due to not wearing seat belts; one woman was partially ejected from her seat resulting in her death at the scene. She has been identified as 31-year-old Cecilia Villalobos by Riverside County coroner's office.
Two girls aged eight and twelve also died at the scene while four others suffered major injuries including an eleven-year-old girl who had to be airlifted to hospital along with another victim.
The cause of this fatal collision is still unknown but CHP officers have stated that not all passengers wore seat belts during travel despite only eight being available for use within their SUV vehicle.
This tragedy closed down six miles worth of interstate for approximately eight hours which caused significant delays for thousands of drivers traveling through Whitewater that day.
