The Halifax County Sheriff's Office reported that the mother was involved in a "major automobile accident" at around 6:19 p.m. on Lonnie B. Greene Road in Roanoke Rapids.
The authorities have stated that they are unable to determine why the woman left her child at the store before the accident occurred, and her current condition remains critical.
