One driver in critical condition, all suspects in custody

A multi-vehicle collision resulting from a police pursuit of a car taken in a carjacking has led to the temporary closure of I-435 at Bannister Road in Jackson County. The incident occurred on Tuesday and left one driver critically injured.

According to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, officers were pursuing a stolen red Toyota Corolla believed to have been taken in a robbery and carjacking. South patrol officers located the suspect vehicle along with multiple suspects attempting another robbery on East 101st Terr. As responding officers approached, the suspect vehicle fled from police.

During the pursuit, the stolen Toyota veered off an embankment from the entrance ramp onto southbound I-435 from Bannister Road and entered into the southbound lanes of I-435. A black Volvo T6 traveling on I-435 braked abruptly to avoid colliding with the Toyota. Unfortunately, this caused it to be rear-ended by a red Freightliner truck which pushed both vehicles across all lanes of I-435 and into a ditch. Subsequently, the Freightliner also struck the stolen Toyota.

The driver of the Volvo was transported to hospital in critical condition while no other injuries have been reported as a result of this collision. Meanwhile, authorities revealed that prior to being involved in this incident, an initial carjacking victim had been beaten by suspects suspected of stealing their vehicle. The victim is currently listed as stable after being transported for medical treatment.

All suspects involved were apprehended following a brief foot chase by law enforcement officials at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing according to local authorities.

In light of this severe injury accident causing significant traffic disruption on I-435 near Bannister Road exit ramps, motorists are advised by The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seek alternative routes until further notice.
