Multiple Vehicles Involved in Major Crash on Sagamore Bridge
Several people were sent to the hospital after a major crash involving multiple vehicles occurred on Saturday afternoon on the Sagamore Bridge. The bridge was temporarily shut down in both directions due to the accident, which caused traffic delays of up to 3 miles.
According to Massachusetts State Police, they responded to a westbound crash that involved a roll-over with injuries and entrapment. Five people were taken to local hospitals with injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation initially issued an advisory on Twitter just after 5 p.m. Saturday saying no traffic was getting over the bridge, with Route 6 eastbound and westbound temporarily closed. Thirty minutes later, MassDOT said traffic was getting by the crash however slowly, with the left lanes eastbound and westbound still closed as the investigation and cleanup continued.
At just after 6 p.m., MassDOT announced that all lanes had reopened and that traffic delays would ease. Four vehicles were towed from the scene according to state police.
There is no word yet if weather played any kind of role in this incident since heavy rainfall has been reported throughout Saturday in this region.
