29 fatal boating incidents in 2022, an increase from 22 that happened in 2021.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has issued a safety reminder to boaters ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. The agency is urging everyone planning to spend time on the water to prioritize safety while having fun.

According to TWRA Officer Hunter Daniels, there have been nine deadly boating incidents so far in 2023, one more than this time last year. In total for 2022, there were 29 fatal boating incidents, an increase from 22 that happened in 2021.

Officer Daniels said drunk driving is the leading cause of boating accidents in Tennessee. "An impaired operator on the water takes their boat back to the boat ramp, puts their boat on the trailer and they now become an impaired operator on the road. Make sure you always have a sober operator," he added.

To ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for all boaters during Memorial Day Weekend and beyond, TWRA recommends following these tips:

  • Always wear life jackets
  • Never operate a boat under influence
  • Keep a proper lookout at all times
  • Maintain safe speeds
  • Be aware of weather conditions

"If we can save one life through our efforts... then we've done our job," said Officer Daniels. Boaters are urged to follow these guidelines and stay vigilant while enjoying themselves out on Tennessee's waters.
