A tragic incident unfolded in Person County on Monday morning when a North Carolina state employee was killed by the father of a child he accidentally hit with a state-owned vehicle. The incident occurred around 6:30 am on Dink Ashley Road near Timberlake.
According to deputies from the Person County Sheriff's Office, Jeffrey McKay, an engineering supervisor with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, was driving a state-owned vehicle when he struck and fatally injured a young boy who was walking with his parents. The family had run out of gas and had begun walking together at the time of the accident.
Upon realizing what had happened, McKay pulled over and immediately called 911 for assistance. However, as authorities arrived at the scene, they were shocked to discover that Chad Woods, the father of the child who was hit by McKay's vehicle, drew out a gun and shot McKay.
In an unexpected turn of events, after shooting McKay, Woods and his partner fled from the scene in McKay's truck while leaving behind their deceased child and McKay himself. Concerned drivers passing by witnessed this horrifying sight and promptly dialed emergency services. Paramedics rushed McKay to a local hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Following leads provided by witnesses at the scene along with information obtained during their investigation into this shocking crime against an innocent public servant trying to help those involved in an accident; deputies located Chad Woods' residence where they subsequently arrested him.
Chad Woods now faces charges including second-degree murder for killing Jeffrey Mckay as well as larceny of a motor vehicle for stealing Mckay's truck during their escape from justice.
It is important to note that thus far no charges have been filed against the mother of the deceased child involved in this heartbreaking incident.
