DEP truck flipped over, driver suffered minor injuries, front-seat passenger ejected and pinned beneath the vehicle

An employee of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) tragically lost their life in a car accident in Queens early Thursday morning. According to police, the incident occurred when a Mercedes-Benz collided with the city truck in which the DEP worker was a passenger.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken into custody following the crash, and charges are pending against them, as stated by law enforcement officials. The fatal collision took place at Atlantic Ave. and Lefferts Blvd. in Richmond Hill shortly after 2:30 a.m.

Authorities reported that the DEP truck was traveling east on Atlantic Ave., while the Mercedes-Benz was heading south on Lefferts Blvd. The impact of the crash caused significant damage to both vehicles and resulted in the DEP truck flipping over.

The 40-year-old male driver of the DEP truck sustained minor injuries but declined medical attention at the scene, according to police reports. Unfortunately, his front-seat passenger, a 38-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle during impact and became trapped underneath it.

Tragically, despite efforts by emergency medical personnel who rushed him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, he succumbed to "severe head and body trauma." As of now, authorities have not released his name publicly.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz remained at the scene following this devastating incident. Emergency Medical Services transported them to New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital for treatment. Police confirmed that their injuries were non-life-threatening and they were listed as being in stable condition.

At present time, charges against this individual are still pending investigation by law enforcement officials.

This unfortunate accident serves as another reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike on our roads. The loss of life is always deeply saddening for any community or organization involved.
