One fatality, five injuries

An Oconee County man lost his life in a tragic three-vehicle crash that occurred on Friday near Hiawassee, Georgia. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Mark Savage, 63, of Watkinsville was killed in the accident which also left five others injured.

The incident took place around 12:50 p.m. on Georgia Highway 17 close to the Owl Creek Road intersection. The crash involved a Mack dump truck traveling northbound on Highway 17 and negotiating a curve when it experienced a possible mechanical issue. As a result, the driver lost control of the truck and entered the southbound lane where it collided with Savage's southbound 2008 GMC Sierra 2500.

Following the collision, Savage's vehicle veered off the road while the dump truck continued northward and crashed head-on into a Ford F-150 pickup driven by Newton Wilcox, 77, of Hiawassee. The dump truck then went off-road and overturned down an embankment.

Tragically, Mark Savage died at the scene of the wreck. Five other individuals involved in this devastating accident were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical condition.

Savage's eleven year old grandson, Hinton Dalton, is currently in intensive care due to critical injuries sustained during this horrific incident. Jeremy Dalton (41), Hinton's father who hails from Watkinsville was also injured but has since been released from hospital after receiving medical treatment.

Additionally, another cousin aged ten remains hospitalized as well as two other individuals identified as Charles W. Farmer (68) from Cleveland who was driving the dump truck and Newton Wilcox mentioned earlier who was operating his Ford F-150 pickup at that time.

The family had been returning home from a water park outing in Hiawassee when this tragic accident occurred. Jeremy Dalton was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, while Hinton and his cousin Gabe were flown to Children Scottish Rite Hospital located in Atlanta.

As the Daltons face numerous medical bills resulting from life flights and hospital stays, they are seeking donations to help cover these expenses as well as support them during their time away from work while caring for their son.
