One Person Dead in Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-40 in North Carolina
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a fatal accident occurred on Tuesday morning involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 40 near Benson. The crash caused the westbound lanes in Johnston County to be shut down for about seven hours while eastbound lanes were bumper-to-bumper.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying.
Fortunately, both men inside the white tractor-trailer were able to crawl out unharmed. However, one person died at the scene from injuries sustained during the collision.
The tank of one of the trucks was damaged during impact causing approximately 75 gallons of diesel fuel spillage onto I-40 creating a hazardous material situation which required crews bringing sand to soak up all oil and fuel before cleaning up everything properly.
State Highway Patrol troopers are still investigating this tragic incident which serves as a reminder for everyone always drive safely because accidents can happen anytime anywhere without warning.
