One Dead and Four Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash in Rancho San Diego
Authorities have reported that a three-vehicle collision in the Rancho San Diego area on Friday resulted in one fatality and four injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 4:35 p.m. at the intersection of Cuyamaca College Drive West and Jamacha Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The driver of a black Honda Civic is suspected to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they ran a red light at the intersection of state Route 54 and Cuyamaca College Drive, stated Officer Jared Grieshaber with CHP. He added, "Based on the video that I watched, the vehicle was attempting to go straight and was passing stopped traffic, and it was passing traffic in the right turn lane attempting to go straight."
Law enforcement obtained footage from a white Tesla involved in the crash which revealed that after hitting a black Nissan first, the Honda Civic then collided with their vehicle as well. Both cars were attempting to make left turns into a shopping center.
Tragically, one person seated in the rear passenger seat of the black Nissan died at the scene. The driver sustained unknown injuries while another passenger sitting in front suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.
The sons of this deceased individual confirmed his identity as their father who was aged over 80 years old.
Meanwhile, both drivers involved also sustained injuries - with serious harm inflicted upon those driving both vehicles - but are expected to recover.
As a result of this devastating accident, all lanes on eastbound state Route 54 and Cuyamaca College Drive were blocked for several hours before eventually reopening later on.
