The plane’s operator and lone occupant, who was identified Monday as 35-year-old Christopher Caruana of Grand Island, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
One Person Dead in Porter Plane Crash
On Sunday afternoon, a Harmon Rocket airplane crashed near Braley Road in the Town of Porter, resulting in the death of its operator and lone occupant. The New York State Police reported that 35-year-old Christopher Caruana from Grand Island was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police reports, the plane was traveling north from Shear Airport when it failed to gain proper altitude and collided with trees and power lines before crashing into a cornfield just before 3:10 p.m. Authorities do not believe that Caruana was performing any stunts but rather heading home.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that Caruana had more than 5,000 hours of flight time as an experienced pilot. Both FAA and NTSB are working together with local authorities to determine whether it was pilot error or mechanical failure that caused the accident.
As of Monday morning, Braley Road between Porter Center Road and Youngstown-Wilson Road remains closed while investigations continue. The New York State Police provided a full update on the incident for those interested in learning more about this tragic event.
