One person dead, teen driver injured
One Killed and Teen Driver Hospitalized in Three-Vehicle Crash
A fatal three-vehicle crash occurred on Monday afternoon in Johnston County, North Carolina. The incident happened around 2:45 p.m. on US Highway 70 near Financial Drive, close to the entrance of Walmart in Clayton.
The accident involved a black Dodge Ram truck, a 2017 Toyota Rav4, and a 2023 Honda CRV. The driver of the Rav4 has been identified as Joan Ann Drake, aged 63 years old from Clayton. Sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart stated that "a 17-year-old in a 2005 Toyota Camry was traveling in the left lane eastbound side and multiple witnesses told officers that leading up to the wreck, the boy and someone in a black Dodge Ram truck were speeding and driving aggressively." The Camry then crashed into the Rav4 causing it to flip over before hitting CRV which was waiting at stop sign for its turn onto eastbound lanes of US-70.
The teenage driver suffered minor injuries including lacerations on his hand while he was taken to WakeMed hospital where he is being treated under pediatric care. The driver of CRV who is identified as a woman aged twenty-six did not sustain any serious injury during this incident.
Police closed down all eastbound lanes of US-70 while they investigated further into this matter. They are continuing their investigation into reconstructing what led up to this tragic event; charges are pending until results come back from their investigation.
