One Person Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash Near Roca
A tragic accident occurred on Saturday night near Roca, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old Lincoln resident. According to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, Alexander M. Schoneweis lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole on South 14th Street just north of Saltillo Road.
The crash took place shortly after 8:30 p.m., prompting emergency responders from both the sheriff's office and Southwest Fire and Rescue to rush to the scene. Despite their efforts, Schoneweis was pronounced dead at the site after being extricated from his car.
Although he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact, Schoneweis' vehicle lacked airbags or other safety equipment that could have potentially saved his life. While drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in this incident, authorities suspect that speed played a role in causing it.
In response to this tragedy, South 14th Street had been closed for several hours as investigators worked diligently to piece together what happened leading up to this fatal event. Additionally, workers from Lincoln Electric System disconnected power lines within close proximity for rescue personnel's safety during their investigation.
