Tijuana officials have revealed that approximately half of the streetlights in the city are outdated and in need of modernization. According to Jaime Brambila Álvarez, head of Tijuana's Public Services, around 38,000 streetlights require replacement, which will cost the city more than $11 million.

Brambila Álvarez stated that they have already renovated over 27,000 lights by simply changing the ballast or bulbs. Their goal is to replace 50 streetlights daily. Currently, about 20 percent of Tijuana's street-lighting system does not work at all.

One of their major projects for 2024 is to eliminate the obsolete network and install new LED technology throughout the city. However, this endeavor comes with a hefty price tag of 200 million pesos. Brambila Álvarez explained that LED technology rarely experiences downtime as it has integrated components.

When questioned about why there are so many non-functional lights across Tijuana, he attributed it to numerous short circuits and auto accidents that damage the lights or connectors. In an effort to address safety concerns associated with concrete poles causing fatalities upon impact, aluminum poles have been introduced as they offer more flexibility during collisions.

To improve lighting infrastructure further, Tijuana has planned twelve installation projects throughout the city as part of their ongoing modernization efforts.

This initiative aims not only to enhance visibility but also contribute towards making Tijuana a safer and more efficient place for its residents and visitors alike.
