Pedestrian died

A tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning in Wilmington when a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle. The local police department responded to a 911 call at approximately 2:15 a.m., reporting the accident at the intersection of S. South and Sugartree Streets.

The victim has been identified as Daniel Smith, aged 27. He was immediately rushed to Clinton Memorial Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

As part of their investigation into the incident, law enforcement officials were able to access surveillance footage from businesses located within the downtown area. This footage revealed that the suspect vehicle involved in the collision is believed to be a dark-colored SUV resembling either a Jeep Commander or Honda Pilot.

Authorities are now urging residents and businesses situated around North Lincoln and Columbus Streets to review any video recordings they may have captured during that time period. Their hope is that someone might identify the possible suspect vehicle from their footage.

According to police reports, after striking Mr. Smith, the driver of the SUV fled north on North South Street before turning east onto Main Street and then continuing north on North Lincoln Street. It is suspected that there may be noticeable damage on the passenger side of this vehicle.

The last known sighting of this suspect vehicle was at the intersection of North Lincoln and Columbus Streets, according to officers investigating this case.

In light of these developments, anyone who possesses information regarding this incident is strongly encouraged to contact authorities promptly with any relevant details they may have. The Wilmington Police Department can be reached directly at 937-382-3833.

This unfortunate event serves as another reminder for both drivers and pedestrians alike about practicing caution while navigating roadways—especially during late-night hours when visibility can often be compromised due to reduced lighting conditions.
