San Jose resident arrested for DUI after driving truck off cliff in Santa Cruz

Driver sustained major injuries and was arrested for DUI
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a major accident that occurred early Sunday morning in Santa Cruz. According to the CHP, a San Jose resident suspected of driving under the influence drove his truck off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean from East Cliff Drive.
A white work truck drove off East Cliff Drive and through the safety railing, plunging over the cliff and dropping 20-30 feet into shallow water below. The driver, who was not identified by authorities, sustained major injuries as a result of the crash.
"The 50 year San Jose resident sustained major injuries as a result of the crash and was later arrested for DUI," said CHP in their tweet about this incident. "Please do not drink and drive."
The suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment before being taken into custody on suspicion of driving under influence. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported in connection with this incident.
An effort by rescue teams, to pull the truck from the water, took several hours. As did the effort to clear up debris at the scene.
This is yet another reminder of how dangerous it can be when people choose to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. It's important for everyone to remember never to drink and drive or operate any vehicle if they are impaired in any way.
