officer hospitalized with serious injuries, but is considered stable
A San Diego Police Department motorcycle officer was hit by an SUV in Pacific Beach on Thursday afternoon, resulting in serious injuries. The accident occurred at around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Kendall Street.
According to SDPD Lt. Adam Sharki, the officer was riding his duty motorcycle along Garnet Avenue when the collision sent him airborne. An off-duty Coronado Police Department (CPD) officer and several witnesses rushed to help the injured officer, pulling the motorcycle off of him and giving him aid until paramedics arrived.
The injured officer was hospitalized with serious injuries but is considered stable, according to Lt. Sharki's statement.
A helmet believed to be that of the officer's was left on a nearby sidewalk with a large crack down its crown.
Responding officers had taped off the intersection while east and westbound traffic on Garnet Avenue were blocked for investigation purposes.
There are several cooperating witnesses as well as security footage from nearby homes or businesses that may provide more information about what happened during this incident.
Witnesses said they saw emergency lights flashing before hearing sirens coming from the Officer just before he got hit by a Ford Bronco turning onto Garnet Ave in front of him causing severe damage to its passenger-side fender.
An off-duty Coronado officer who witnessed the crash was able to use the Officer's radio to call for help.
"We are grateful our officer was in the right place at the right time to assist the injured officer during this horrible collision," a statement from CPD said.
The driver of the Ford Bronco stayed at the scene and is not accused of any crimes at this point. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
