The northbound lanes of Interstate 55 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri were closed for several hours on Thursday, June 29 due to a semi tractor-trailer crash. The accident occurred near exit 104 and emergency and hazmat crews quickly responded.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the semi went off the right side of the road and overturned. The driver, identified as Christopher Ford from Lake City, Florida, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Cape Girardeau. Fortunately, Ford only suffered moderate injuries.
The Fruitland Area Fire Protection District reported that the semi was carrying approximately 39,000 pounds of consumer grade bleach at the time of the crash. As a result, hazmat crews were called to handle any potential spills or leaks.
Removing the bleach from the trailer proved to be a challenging task for responders as it had to be done manually. It took more than four hours and involved 55 first responders from various local agencies working together to safely remove all traces of bleach and clean up the wreckage.
Finally, shortly before 10:30 p.m., after extensive efforts by multiple agencies including Fruitland Area Fire Protection District, East County Fire Protection District, Cape Girardeau Fire Department among others mentioned above along with assistance from young men from Jackson High School; all northbound lanes of I-55 were reopened.
