Bus driver taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries

A semi-truck driver from Atlanta has been preliminarily charged after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident in Jasper County, Indiana. The incident occurred on Thursday evening and resulted in a bus driver being trapped for several hours.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, 57-year-old Aregay Tesfay Gebremariam has been charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving catastrophic bodily injury, which is considered a Level 4 felony.

The incident was reported around 11:15 p.m. when the Lowell Regional Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls regarding a collision between a school bus and a semi-truck on I-65 northbound at the 222 mile marker, two miles north of the Fair Oaks exit.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus driver rear-ended the semi-truck in the right lane. Initially, both drivers stopped and received aid. However, according to officials, "the semi suddenly drove away."

When officers arrived at the scene, they found that the bus driver was pinned inside their vehicle but remained alert. It took several hours to extricate them from their position as they were trapped alone on board.

Law enforcement authorities managed to locate the parked semi-truck during a traffic stop in Jasper County. The trailer exhibited substantial damage indicating recent involvement in a significant crash.

The driver was also located and reportedly provided inconsistent statements about what transpired on Interstate-65. Meanwhile, medical personnel transported the injured bus driver to a hospital in Chicago for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries.

Inspections of both vehicles involved will be conducted by Indiana State Police's commercial vehicle enforcement division as part of their ongoing investigation into this incident.

Officials have emphasized that alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be contributing factors leading up to this crash.
