A truck driver in Arizona has been charged with multiple felonies after causing a six-vehicle crash earlier this year that resulted in the deaths of five people. According to officials, 36-year-old Danny Tiner was actively using TikTok on his phone just moments before the accident occurred.
The incident took place on January 12th at around 6 a.m. Tiner, who was driving eastbound on Interstate 10, admitted to police that he had received a message on his electronic work tablet and acknowledged it. When he looked back at the road, he realized it was too late to stop his vehicle and avoid a collision.
An initial incident report revealed that Tiner's truck collided with two passenger vehicles, wedging them into the back of another commercial truck. The impact then pushed that truck forward, causing it to hit two more cars. Tragically, both passenger vehicles caught fire and were completely destroyed. The flames spread to the commercial trucks involved as well.
The victims of this horrific accident have been identified as Ryan Gooding, Andrew Standifird, Jerardo Vazquez, Willis Thompson, and Gilberto Franco.
Further investigation by the Department of Public Safety uncovered additional details about Tiner's actions leading up to the crash. It was determined that he had been speeding in a construction zone where the posted speed limit was 55 mph. Additionally, forensic examination of Tiner's cell phone revealed evidence showing that he had been actively using TikTok at the time of impact.
As a result of these findings, Danny Tiner now faces ten felony charges related to the incident. These include five counts of manslaughter for each life lost in the crash along with four counts of endangerment and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
This tragic event serves as yet another reminder about the dangers posed by distracted driving. Authorities are urging drivers to prioritize safety behind-the-wheel and refrain from engaging in any activities that may divert their attention from the road.
