Series of Crashes Involving an Elk Close Southbound I-25 in Colorado City

Highway reopened
A series of crashes involving an elk caused the closure of southbound I-25 near Colorado City, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The incidents occurred on Friday morning.
The first crash was reported at approximately 6:25 a.m. between Colorado City and Walsenburg at mile marker 59. A vehicle collided with an elk, but fortunately, all individuals involved are expected to be okay.
Shortly after, at around 6:30 a.m., another vehicle struck the lifeless body of the elk from the previous collision. As a result, this second vehicle rolled over, leading to one person being airlifted to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, no updates regarding their condition have been provided thus far.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, at approximately 6:45 a.m., yet another crash occurred involving the same deceased elk on the roadway. Thankfully, this time around, the driver managed to escape unharmed.
Due to these multiple accidents and subsequent investigations taking place on site, authorities were forced to close down southbound I-25 for some time as they worked towards resolving each incident safely and efficiently.
Fortunately, the highway has since reopened following successful resolution of all related matters by emergency personnel and law enforcement officials.
