Authorities have confirmed that the pilot and passenger of a small aircraft tragically lost their lives after their plane crashed into a lake near Selkirk Drive in Hickory, North Carolina. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m.
According to officials from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the single-engine Super Petrel Amphibious Plane hit powerlines shortly after taking off from Hickory Regional Airport. The impact caused the aircraft to crash into the nearby lake.
The consequences of this accident were not limited to those directly involved. Around 18,000 customers residing in Caldwell and Catawba counties experienced power outages following the crash, according to Duke Energy's outage map.
Tragically, both the pilot and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by troopers who responded to the incident. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
In response to this devastating event, an investigation has been launched by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They will work diligently to uncover any factors that may have contributed to this tragic accident.
