South Broadway Overpass Damaged by Tractor-Trailer

Bridge opened with severe restrictions
The South Broadway overpass in Rockland County, New York, has reopened with severe restrictions following a tractor-trailer accident on Thursday. The bridge was damaged when the truck attempted to pass through with a load that exceeded the height limits of the New York State Thruway.
To ensure public safety, officials from the Thruway Authority have reduced the bridge to a single lane with alternating traffic. This traffic pattern will remain in effect until permanent repairs can be completed. In addition, Orangetown town officials announced on Facebook that no trucks will be allowed on the overpass until further notice and detours will be posted.
The accident occurred at 4:45 am and resulted in multiple lane closures on the southbound side of the Thruway for approximately 12 hours. As a result, there were significant traffic back-ups.
According to New York State police, Ivan N. Varava, a 39-year-old driver from Hollywood, Florida, was operating his tractor-trailer southbound when he collided with the overpass structure while transporting a large steel tower. The height of Varava's trailer measured approximately than 3.5 feet higher than the clearance for this particular overpass of 14'1".
Varava was transported to Nyack Hospital for evaluation following the incident. He was driving for San Trans Inc., based out of Bartlett Illinois but did not possess a permit allowing him to transport an oversized load on this section of Thruway. As a result, he has been issued multiple traffic tickets for violating Thruway Rules and Regulations.
