Gainesville man seriously injured, Dade City man suffered minor injuries
A 20-year-old man from Gainesville, Florida was seriously injured in a crash early Wednesday morning while driving a stolen truck through Sumter County. The incident occurred on State Road 44 next to the Pilot Travel Center.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the young man was recklessly driving a stolen 2017 Ford F250 at high speeds on northbound I-75 near mile marker 316. An FHP trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver chose to flee and exited onto westbound State Road 44. However, instead of continuing in that direction, the vehicle turned around and started heading east.
Tragically, as it was making this maneuver, the stolen truck collided with a westbound tractor-trailer that was turning left into the Pilot Travel Center. Both vehicles eventually came to rest in the parking lot of the center.
The Gainesville man sustained serious injuries as a result of this collision. Meanwhile, the driver of the semi-trailer truck, identified as a 57-year-old man from Dade City, suffered minor injuries.
As of now, no charges have been filed against either party involved in this incident. The investigation is still ongoing and authorities are working diligently to gather all relevant information surrounding this case.
This unfortunate event serves as another reminder about road safety and responsible driving practices. Reckless actions can lead not only to personal harm but also endanger others sharing the roadways. It is crucial for everyone behind-the-wheel to prioritize safety and adhere strictly to traffic laws at all times.
