Two deaths, suspect in custody
The Memphis Police Department has apprehended a suspect involved in a fatal crash following a carjacking incident. The arrest took place after an officer witnessed the suspect making an illegal U-turn and speeding away in a stolen vehicle on Cottonwood Road around 12:30 pm.
Upon running the license plate, it was discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen and linked to multiple robberies. The stolen car turned onto Perkins Road, heading northbound. As the officer approached the intersection of Perkins and Cottonwood, they observed that the driver of the stolen vehicle had caused a three-car collision at Perkins and American Way.
According to witnesses, some individuals inside the car responsible for the crash attempted to rob employees at a food truck located on Cottonwood Road and South Perkins.
While one person fled from the crashed stolen vehicle, two other occupants remained inside. The individual who ran from the scene then proceeded to carjack another victim near Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Showcase by forcefully taking their vehicle. In doing so, he rammed into a police squad car before officers initiated pursuit.
During this pursuit, which continued despite collisions with other vehicles at I-240 and Norris Road as well as Millbranch Road and Shelby Drive respectively, law enforcement eventually cornered him at Mill Creek Apartments where he was taken into custody. Due to injuries sustained during these crashes, he was transported to Regional One Hospital but is currently listed as being in non-critical condition.
Tragically, one person who stayed inside the initially crashed stolen vehicle at Perkins and American Way was pronounced dead at the scene while another occupant suffered critical injuries upon transport to Regional One Hospital where they were later pronounced deceased. Three other individuals involved in the collision were taken to nearby hospitals with non-critical injuries.
As of now, the suspect's identity has not been disclosed.
