Fatal Crash on 71 Freeway in Pomona Leaves One Dead

One person dead, four others hospitalized
Authorities have apprehended a suspected drunk driver who is believed to be responsible for a horrific accident on the 71 Freeway in Pomona. The crash occurred late Sunday evening, resulting in the death of one person and leaving four others hospitalized.
According to reports, the incident took place around 10 p.m. on both northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway, just north of Rio Rancho Road. Upon arriving at the scene, officers from the Pomona Police Department discovered a flatbed tow truck that had been struck by another vehicle.
A statement released by the Pomona police stated, "They discovered the flatbed tow truck traveling northbound on SR-71 had been struck by another vehicle, causing the tow truck to jump the center divider into oncoming southbound traffic."
After crossing over into opposing traffic, the tow truck collided with a minivan that was traveling southbound. Tragically, the driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released their identity.
Emergency responders rushed to aid those involved in this devastating crash. Four individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging in severity.
Law enforcement officials arrested Mark Shoemate, a 33-year-old resident of Aliso Viejo, under suspicion of driving under influence (DUI) and vehicular manslaughter related to his alleged role in triggering this fatal collision.
