No injuries reported
Fire officials have reported that no one was injured after an SUV crashed into a currency exchange, causing significant damage to the facade. The incident took place on Saturday morning in Wauconda.
The Wauconda Police Department and Wauconda Fire District were alerted to the scene at around 10:04 a.m. Emergency crews arrived at the Wauconda Exchange Currency located at 469 West Liberty Street in response to a car crashing into the building.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the vehicle had driven over a parking curb, onto a sidewalk, and straight through the business. The SUV was completely inside the structure when emergency personnel arrived. Fortunately, both occupants of the car managed to exit safely.
Employees who were present during the incident also evacuated without any injuries. It is worth noting that there were no customers inside at the time of impact as well. Paramedics evaluated everyone involved and confirmed that no injuries had been sustained.
A tow truck was called in to remove the car from within the structure according to Acting Battalion Chief Jason Daun of Wauconda Fire District. Additionally, representatives from Wauconda Building and Zoning Department assessed the situation and ordered for immediate closure of business operations due to extensive damage caused by this accident.
While it has been determined that structural integrity remains intact, substantial damage has occurred to both glass windows and brickwork on front-facing sections of building's exterior. A cleanup crew promptly cleared away debris while a board-up company secured temporary closure by covering up large openings created by this crash.
Investigations are currently underway regarding what led up to this incident; however, preliminary reports suggest it may have been accidental according to Chief Daun's statement.
