Tanker Crash Shuts Down Moravia Road Bridge and I-895 in Baltimore

A tanker crash caused a major traffic disruption in northeast Baltimore on Wednesday afternoon. The Moravia Road bridge and part of Interstate 895 were shut down for several hours due to the incident.

According to Baltimore City fire officials, the accident occurred around 11:25 a.m. when a tanker crashed and overturned, spilling tar all over Moravia Road. Parts of the concrete jersey wall were also damaged as a result.

The Maryland Transportation Authority reported that southbound I-895 was closed at the I-95/895 split approaching Moravia Road, while northbound lanes remained open. Access to northbound I-95 express toll lanes from Moravia Road was also closed.

The tanker was traveling in the Interstate 95 express lanes and failed to negotiate a turn on the Moravia Road bridge over I-895.

After several hours of closure, MDTA announced shortly after 3:30 p.m. that I-895 had reopened.

This incident caused significant delays for commuters during rush hour traffic but thankfully no injuries have been reported so far.
