Tanker truck carrying ammonium nitrate crashes on I-81 in Maryland

Temporary evacuation of nearby businesses, partial closure of southbound lanes of the interstate
A tanker truck carrying ammonium nitrate crashed on I-81 in Maryland early Monday, causing the temporary shutdown of the roadway and evacuation of nearby businesses. The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Halfway Boulevard in Hagerstown, according to Maryland State Police.
The preliminary investigation suggests that a tire blew out of the truck, causing it to swerve off-road and smash through a guardrail before rolling over into an embankment. As a result, about three gallons of ammonium nitrate spilled onto the road.
As a precautionary measure, authorities asked nearby businesses within 1,500 feet of the scene to evacuate temporarily. However, they were allowed to return by 9:30 am after officials cleared up most of the spillage.
The driver was identified as a 32-year-old Pennsylvania man who was rushed to Meritus Medical Center for treatment following injuries sustained from the accident. No update has been provided yet regarding his condition.
While northbound lanes reopened at around 8:50 am on Monday morning after cleanup efforts had finished; however, southbound lanes remained partially closed as authorities continued their investigation into what caused this incident.
Officials have not released any further information about what led up to this crash or if there are any charges pending against anyone involved with operating or maintaining these vehicles on our roads today.
