Tanker truck overturns on I-595 in Fort Lauderdale

Crews in Broward County are working to clean up a small fuel spill and transfer 9,000 gallons of fuel after a traffic accident resulted in a tanker truck overturning on Interstate 595. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the crash happened at around 9 am on Monday morning on the westbound lanes of I-595 just east of I-95.
The incident led to crews closing all lanes of I-595 while they worked to upright the truck, remove the fuel, and transfer the remaining gas into a second trailer. FHP stated that there were no reports of injuries but motorists were warned to expect delays.
According to FHP, "the tanker truck was involved in a side-swipe collision with another vehicle before the truck driver lost control and flipped over." An estimated 20 gallons of fuel leaked from the vehicle before it was contained.
The accident prompted officials to close all lanes of I-595 east of I-95. Motorists were urged to use Griffin Road as an alternative route. The sheriff's office said drivers should expect lengthy delays until further notice.
Furthermore, entry points for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades have been affected by this incident. Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Florida Turnpike and I-95 while westbound traffic is being diverted onto southbound lanes of I-95. Additionally, FHP plans to close westbound I-95 at US Highway 1 at Port Everglades.
Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue team has secured a small leak caused by this rollover accident; however, cleanup efforts are still ongoing. They tweeted: "#BSFR is operating at the scene...No injuries; however, a small fuel leak has been secured by our HazMat Team."
