60-year-old driver killed in DUI crash in Escondido

The driver of the other car, an Encinitas resident, had to be extricated from the wreckage, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by the Escondido police after a fatal car crash on Friday night. The teenager reportedly rear-ended another man's car while fleeing from the police, killing the driver who was identified as a 60-year-old Encinitas resident. According to investigators, the teen had just left a large party and was suspected of being drunk when he crashed into the other vehicle at Via Rancho Parkway near Lomas Serenas Drive around 10:45 p.m.
The officers were responding to complaints about the gathering in a neighborhood north of Kit Carson park when they nearly collided head-on with their patrol car. Minutes later, another officer spotted the white Dodge Charger speeding south on Via Rancho Parkway towards Interstate 15. That officer attempted to stop the car but failed as it ran through a red light and accelerated to more than 100 mph before colliding with another vehicle.
The victim had to be extricated from his wreckage and was taken to a hospital where he died due to his injuries. His identity will not be released until his family has been notified. Meanwhile, police said that the teenage driver fled after causing an accident but was caught shortly afterward. He suffered minor injuries and faces several charges including vehicle homicide, felony evading police, and driving under influence.
Officers are currently investigating whether anyone provided alcohol at this party for underage drinking or if there is any criminal liability for hosting such events that lead to tragic incidents like this one.
