It does not appear there is any criminality at this point in the investigation, police say.
A tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon in Gramercy, Manhattan, when an 18-year-old cyclist was hit and killed by a truck. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene after striking the teenager around 12:40 p.m., visibly distraught as police questioned him. Despite attempts to save his life, officials say that the injuries sustained by the young cyclist proved fatal.
According to witnesses at the scene, medics attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.
However, what happened next left those present shocked - someone took the victim's electric Citi Bike and rode off while first responders were still trying to revive him.
Police believe that prior to being struck by the truck, the cyclist had been heading north along 1st Avenue before attempting a left turn onto East 17th Street.
At this point in time, authorities do not suspect any criminality involved in this incident.
