Two people died in the crash.

A 19-year-old driver has been charged with several offenses, including DWI resulting in the death of two or more, after a deadly drinking and driving crash in Monett. The accused, Rafael Contreras-Maldonado, was being pursued by a Lawrence County deputy when he ran a red light at the intersection of State Highway 37 and U.S. 60 around 10 p.m on Friday.

The collision involved Contreras-Maldonado's Chevy truck and Larry Alan Brock's Hyundai Elantra. Both Brock, aged 53, and Lydia Shorey, aged 61 - who was a passenger in Brock’s vehicle - died as a result of the accident.

Contreras-Maldonado did not suffer any serious injuries during the incident but admitted to drinking alcohol before getting behind the wheel. He refused to take a preliminary breath sample test; however, EMS workers later conducted blood tests after investigators obtained search warrants.

In addition to DWI charges resulting from multiple deaths caused by his actions while driving under influence of alcohol, Contreras-Maldonado also faces resisting arrest charges along with possession of controlled substances.
