A devastating incident occurred in the small town of Garland, Utah, as a teenage girl was hit and killed by a garbage truck while riding her bike. The Box Elder School District confirmed that the victim was a 17-year-old junior at Bear River High School.
The tragic accident took place at approximately 5:30 a.m. on 1500 Main Street. According to Tremonton-Garland police Chief Dustin Cordova, the young girl was struck by the garbage truck as it exited a parking lot. Despite immediate life-saving efforts from first responders, they were unable to save her.
Chief Cordova expressed his sorrow over the incident and acknowledged its impact on the tight-knit community: "It's really devastating, especially to a small town like ours... It really hurts everyone in this community, including our first responders."
Officials revealed that prior to heading to Bear River High School for the day, she had plans to meet up with a friend. Steve Carlsen, superintendent for the Box Elder School District, emphasized how deeply such an event affects everyone involved: "Anytime that happens in a community like ours, it affects a lot of people." To support those affected by this tragedy within their school community, additional counselors and licensed clinical social workers have been made available.
Carlsen also highlighted how incidents like these serve as reminders not to take life for granted: "You know it will put a damper on Bear River High School for awhile and gives pause for everyone to have deeper appreciation for what life is and try not to take it for granted."
As authorities continue their investigation into this heartbreaking accident, Chief Cordova assured that they are treating it seriously but currently do not have any evidence suggesting anything other than an unfortunate accident: "We're investigating it like we would any other incident but at this time we don't really have any evidence that suggests it's anything other than a really tragic accident."
The loss of this young life has left the community in mourning, and their thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this devastating event.
