Three people were killed and three others injured in a car crash in Douglas, Arizona on Thursday morning, September 7. The incident occurred when an officer from the Douglas Police Department observed a vehicle traveling at an estimated speed of 80 MPH into the city limits from State Route 80 east of Douglas. Despite not conducting a traffic stop or pursuing the vehicle due to distance, patrol units were made aware of the reckless driver.

The situation took a tragic turn when the vehicle caused an accident at the intersection of 15th Street and A Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene, patrol units immediately provided medical aid to those involved as several individuals had been ejected from the reckless driver's vehicle. Unfortunately, three people from that same vehicle succumbed to their injuries.

Multiple agencies including Cochise County Sheriff's Office, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Customs and Border Protection, and US Border Patrol assisted at the scene. During their investigation, authorities discovered that two of the deceased individuals were undocumented migrants. Additionally, two more undocumented migrants were found in the vehicle with minor injuries and they too were taken to hospital for treatment.

The driver of another vehicle hit by this reckless driver was also transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries according to Douglas Police. It is important to note that no law enforcement vehicles were pursuing or closely following this reckless driver when it was initially observed heading towards town.

In light of these events, Douglas Police released a statement acknowledging that drivers involved in human smuggling are often instructed to travel at high speeds in order to deter law enforcement engagement. The investigation into this incident is still ongoing and authorities have decided not to release any information regarding the identities of those who died until their families have been notified.
