Walker Reid Maassen died at Sioux Center Health.

A 20-month-old toddler named Walker Reid Maassen died tragically on May 6 after being struck by a truck driven by his father, Christopher Maassen. The incident occurred on the family farm in Sioux Center where they had spent the day working and playing with their new goats. According to a news release from the Sioux County Sheriff's Office, Christopher stopped to unhook a trailer when he hit his son as he resumed driving.

Walker was described as an energetic and animal-loving child who loved living on the family farm. His mother, Amy Maassen, said that "he was always eager to help with chores or hop into the skid loader whenever the opportunity presented itself." He had just visited Great Plains Zoo two days before his death and was reportedly smiling throughout that day until he could not smile anymore.

The community has rallied around Walker's family since his passing. Many people have offered to cook meals for them or do chores while they grieve. A meal train organized by Walker's grandmother has been planned for them until after Fourth of July. People can also donate to any Peoples Bank location under "Benefit Account for Chris & Amy Maassen."
