A tragic incident occurred in Chelsea, Maine on Wednesday afternoon when a toddler was struck by a tow truck while playing outside. The Maine State Police responded to the scene on Windsor Road at around 2:23 p.m., according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.
According to initial investigations, the 21-month-old child had been playing outside her home on Windsor Road when she "wandered into the roadway and laid down." It was at this moment that a 2007 GMC flatbed tow truck, driven by a 62-year-old male and traveling northbound, struck the child. Shockingly, the driver did not realize it was a child lying in the road until after impact.
Witnesses and police immediately performed CPR until fire and rescue crews arrived at the scene. The injured toddler was rushed to Maine General Hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into this heartbreaking incident is still ongoing as authorities work diligently to gather all relevant information surrounding this accident.
