Tractor-Trailer Carrying Granite Slabs Tips Over on I-95 in Providence

Traffic came to a standstill on Thursday morning as a tractor-trailer carrying 46,000 pounds of granite counter slabs overturned on I-95 North, resulting in debris scattered across the highway.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. when the flat-bed truck was navigating the Thurbers Avenue curve. According to Rhode Island State Police, the slabs suddenly shifted and caused the straps securing them to snap. As a result, the granite slid off the bed and crashed onto the ground.

The impact shattered the slabs into multiple pieces that were strewn across three right lanes and an off-ramp. In response to this hazardous situation, travel was restricted to only one lane while crews from Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) worked diligently to clear away debris and repair deep gouges left by falling slabs.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those involved in or affected by this accident. However, several vehicles suffered damage due to contact with flying granite fragments.

Authorities have identified Carlos Pena Rondon from Philadelphia as the driver of the truck responsible for transporting these counter slabs. He has been cited for violating various US DOT Motor Carrier safety rules and regulations.

After hours of extensive cleanup efforts by RIDOT crews, all lanes were reopened at approximately 7:40 a.m., allowing traffic flow to return back to normal.
