Tractor-trailer crash causes delays on I-64 in Newport News

A tractor-trailer crash caused delays and lane closures on Thursday morning, August 12th, on Interstate 64 in Newport News. The incident was reported by Virginia State Police around 7:25 a.m. when the driver of an overturned tractor-trailer called for help.
The accident occurred near Jefferson Ave., causing all eastbound lanes and one westbound lane to be blocked. According to VDOT cameras, fire trucks and police were present at the scene as they worked to put out a fire coming from what is believed to be the tractor-trailer.
Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle was able to get out before it became fully engulfed and did not suffer any injuries. However, fuel was actively burning and spreading into storm drains according to a post made by Newport News Police Department on Facebook.
VDOT has since reopened two eastbound lanes and all westbound lanes but is asking drivers to seek alternative routes due to ongoing diversions set up at Fort Eustis Blvd (exit 250).
