Pennsylvania State Police have determined that heavy rain and excessive speed were the primary factors behind a tractor-trailer crash on Monday, which resulted in the closure of Interstate 81 in Lebanon County for several hours. According to PSP, the driver was traveling at an unsafe speed given the weather conditions.

The incident occurred when the tractor-trailer jack-knifed between the Pine Grove and Fort Indiantown Gap exits, colliding with a guardrail before careening down an embankment.

Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene and transported the driver to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for medical attention. However, his current condition remains unknown.

In addition to personal injuries sustained by the driver, a fuel tank on board ruptured during impact, resulting in a diesel spillage. Hazmat crews were swiftly dispatched to address this environmental hazard.

Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in this accident as there were no cargo contents being transported by the truck at that time.

The crash took place around 10 a.m., causing significant disruptions throughout I-81's southbound lanes until approximately 4:45 p.m.
