Two people injured, interstate shut down
A crash involving a tractor-trailer caused the closure of a section of I-79 in both directions early Thursday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 12:15 a.m. within a work zone on the northbound lanes, resulting in the tractor-trailer catching fire.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, and two individuals were transported to the hospital for medical attention. Additionally, authorities called upon the Allegheny County Medical Examiner to assist with investigations at the site.
To ensure public safety and facilitate necessary rescue operations, officials closed off Interstate 79 between Mount Nebo Road and the Emsworth/Sewickley Exit. However, by around 6 a.m., traffic resumed on one lane of the southbound side. Subsequently, at approximately 8 a.m., one lane on the northbound side was also reopened.
The cause of this unfortunate accident remains under investigation as authorities work diligently to determine what led to this collision and subsequent fire on I-79's northbound lanes during early morning hours.
